How Mia Works
From signup to live GPS tracking — everything you need to protect your Windows laptop in one place.
Sign Up & Get Your QR Code
Create a free account at mialaptop.com. Mia instantly generates a unique QR code linked to your contact details.
You get 10 free map loads on signup — no payment needed to get started.
Install Mia Tech on Your Laptop
Download the Mia Tech installer from your dashboard and run it as Administrator. It sets your QR code as the Windows lock screen in under 30 seconds.
Works on Windows 10 and Windows 11. No technical knowledge required.
Enable Live GPS Tracking
Install the Mia Agent background service to get real-time GPS coordinates on your dashboard map, updated every 60 seconds — even when the browser is closed.
Each location ping uses one map load. Top up anytime — loads never expire.
You're Protected
Your QR code is on your lock screen. If your laptop is ever lost, the finder scans it with any phone camera and can contact you instantly — no app needed on their end.
Only the contact info you choose to share is visible. Your address and payment details are never exposed.
Installing Mia Tech
Mia Tech is the Windows app that places your QR code on the lock screen. Here's exactly how to install it.
Go to your Dashboard
Sign in at mialaptop.com and open your Dashboard. You'll see your device card with a 6-digit device code.
Download Mia Tech
Click the 'Download Mia Tech' button on your dashboard. A ZIP file will download — the ZIP password is your 6-digit device code.
Extract the ZIP
Right-click the downloaded ZIP file → 'Extract All'. When prompted for a password, enter your 6-digit device code from the dashboard.
Run Install.cmd as Administrator
Inside the extracted folder, right-click Install.cmd and select 'Run as administrator'. Click Yes on the UAC prompt.
QR Code Applied
The installer runs a built-in Windows command to set your QR code as the lock screen wallpaper. It takes about 5 seconds. Lock your screen (Win+L) to verify.
The installer locks the package to your laptop. If you need to reinstall on a different machine, reset the Machine Lock from Dashboard → Overview first.
Installing the Background Agent
The Mia Agent is a Windows background service that sends your laptop's GPS location to your dashboard every 60 seconds — even when the browser is closed.
Download Mia Agent
From your dashboard, click 'Download Mia Agent'. This downloads a separate installer ZIP — use the same 6-digit device code as the password.
Extract and Run Install.bat
Extract the ZIP with your device code. Right-click Install.bat → 'Run as administrator'. The agent installs to C:\MiaAgent\ and registers a Windows Task Scheduler task.
Allow GPS Permission
Windows may ask for location permission. Click 'Allow' when prompted. The agent uses the Windows Location API to get your GPS coordinates.
Agent Runs Silently
The agent starts automatically on Windows startup. It runs silently in the background — no window, no tray icon. It pings your location every 60 seconds.
Verify on Dashboard
Open your dashboard and go to the Location tab. You should see your laptop's location appear on the map within 60 seconds of the agent starting.
Uninstall
To uninstall: run schtasks /delete /tn "MiaLaptopAgent" /f in Command Prompt, then delete C:\MiaAgent\. You can also remove the lock screen image from Registry Editor under PersonalizationCSP.
Checking Live Location
Once the agent is installed, tracking your laptop's live location is simple.
Open the Location Tab
From your dashboard, click 'Location' in the sidebar. The map loads with your laptop's last known position.
60-Second Updates
The map refreshes every 60 seconds when the agent is running. Each refresh consumes one map load from your balance.
Map Loads Badge
Your remaining map loads are shown as a badge — green (healthy), amber (5 or fewer), red (0). Top up anytime from the dashboard.
GPS vs Hotspot
Mia uses the Windows Location API which combines GPS, Wi-Fi, and IP data. If accuracy is low (hotspot detected), a warning banner appears on the map.
Location History
Each ping is saved as a recovery event. You can see the timestamp and coordinates of every location update in your dashboard.
