How Mia Protects Your Laptop

Mia combines a QR code on your Windows lock screen with live GPS tracking. If your laptop is ever lost, the finder scans the QR code and can contact you instantly — no app needed on their end.

QR on Lock Screen
A unique QR code is set as your Windows lock screen wallpaper. Anyone who finds your laptop can scan it with any phone camera.
Live GPS Tracking
The background agent sends your laptop's GPS coordinates to your dashboard every 60 seconds — even when the browser is closed.
Privacy First
Only the contact info you choose to share is visible on the finder page. Your address and payment details are never exposed.
Part 1 — Windows App

Installing Mia Tech

Mia Tech is the Windows app that places your QR code on the lock screen. Follow these steps exactly.

1
Go to your Dashboard
Sign in at mialaptop.com and open your Dashboard. You'll see your device card with a 6-digit device code — keep this handy.
2
Download Mia Tech
Click the "Download Mia Tech" button on your dashboard. A ZIP file will download to your computer.
The ZIP password is your 6-digit device code from the dashboard.
3
Extract the ZIP
Right-click the downloaded ZIP file → "Extract All". When prompted for a password, enter your 6-digit device code.
4
Run Install.cmd as Administrator
Inside the extracted folder, right-click Install.cmd and select "Run as administrator". Click Yes on the UAC prompt.
5
QR Code Applied ✓
The installer sets your QR code as the Windows lock screen wallpaper in about 5 seconds. Press Win + L to lock your screen and verify.
Machine lock: the installer locks the package to your laptop. To reinstall on a different machine, reset the Machine Lock from Dashboard → Overview first.
Part 2 — GPS Agent

Installing the Background Agent

The Mia Agent is a Windows background service that sends your laptop's GPS location to your dashboard every 60 seconds — even when the browser is closed.

1
Download Mia Agent
From your dashboard, click "Download Mia Agent". This downloads a separate installer ZIP — use the same 6-digit device code as the password.
2
Extract and Run Install.bat
Extract the ZIP with your device code. Right-click Install.bat → "Run as administrator". The agent installs to C:\MiaAgent\ and registers a Windows Task Scheduler task.
3
Allow GPS Permission
Windows may ask for location permission. Click "Allow" when prompted. The agent uses the Windows Location API to get your GPS coordinates.
4
Agent Runs Silently
The agent starts automatically on Windows startup. It runs silently in the background — no window, no tray icon. It pings your location every 60 seconds.
5
Verify on Dashboard ✓
Open your dashboard and go to the Location tab. Your laptop's location should appear on the map within 60 seconds of the agent starting.
To uninstall: Run schtasks /delete /tn "MiaLaptopAgent" /f in Command Prompt, then delete C:\MiaAgent\. You can also remove the lock screen image from Registry Editor under PersonalizationCSP.
Part 3 — Dashboard

Checking Live Location

Once the agent is installed, tracking your laptop's live location is simple from your dashboard.

Open the Location Tab
From your dashboard, click "Location" in the sidebar. The map loads with your laptop's last known position.
60-Second Updates
The map refreshes every 60 seconds when the agent is running. Each refresh consumes one map load from your balance.
Map Loads Badge
Your remaining map loads are shown as a badge — green (healthy), amber (5 or fewer), red (0). Top up anytime from the dashboard.
GPS vs Hotspot
Mia uses the Windows Location API combining GPS, Wi-Fi, and IP data. If accuracy is low (hotspot detected), a warning banner appears on the map.
Location History
Each ping is saved as a recovery event. You can see the timestamp and coordinates of every location update in your dashboard.
Works When Closed
The agent runs as a Windows Task Scheduler job — it keeps pinging even when your browser is closed or the laptop is locked.
Part 4 — Android

Always Share — Android Tracking

Always Share lets you track your Android phone's live GPS location from the same dashboard. No extra app needed — it works entirely in the browser.

1
Open Android Location Tab
From your dashboard, go to the Android Location tab. You'll see your Android device code and a QR code to open the tracking page on your phone.
2
Scan the QR on Your Phone
Scan the QR code with your Android phone's camera. It opens the Mia tracking page in your phone's browser — no app download needed.
3
Toggle Always Share ON
On the tracking page, tap the "Always Share" toggle to enable it. Your phone will start sending GPS pings to your dashboard every 60 seconds.
The toggle state is saved — it stays ON even if you close and reopen the browser tab.
4
Keep the Tab Open (Recommended)
For best results, keep the browser tab open on your phone. When the tab is open, Mia uses watchPosition for continuous tracking with 30-second forced pings.
5
Background Tracking
When you close the tab or background the browser, Mia uses a Service Worker to continue sending location pings. Battery saver mode on Android may reduce frequency.
About the Always Share toggle
When toggled ON, your phone sends a GPS ping every 60 seconds. Each ping uses one map load. Toggle it OFF to pause tracking and conserve your balance. The toggle state persists across browser sessions.
